Respectful and Natural Care for the Deceased

Many families express a desire for their loved one to remain “as they are,” undisturbed and clothed in the garments or cotton sheet they were wearing when brought into our care.

This is a beautiful and respectful choice, particularly if there will be no open coffin visiting. We honour these wishes with care and understanding.

Wash and Preparation for Visiting

If you choose to visit your loved one in an open coffin, we offer a gentle and respectful ‘wash and preparation for visiting’ service.

This service involves carefully washing the body and hair, trimming nails and nose hairs, shaving, and applying light makeup if desired. To ensure the utmost dignity and sensitivity, we have two lovely, caring ladies to wash and care for females and two equally caring gentlemen for males.

We also welcome families to participate in this deeply personal process if they feel it would be comforting or meaningful. You may wish to assist with certain aspects, such as washing or dressing your loved one.

Our care extends to opening and removing individuals from body bags and handling any medical apparatus, such as breathing tubes, catheters, pacemakers, or defibrillators, with expertise and discretion.

Families are also invited to take keepsakes, such as locks of hair or fingerprints, as cherished mementos.

A Natural, Respectful Alternative to Embalming

It’s important to note that we do not offer embalming, which is often misleadingly referred to as ‘temporary preservation’ or ‘hygienic treatment.’

Embalming is an invasive, toxic process that is rarely necessary and never a legal requirement unless the deceased is being transported internationally.

While some funeral providers may suggest it is needed to prevent distress, in most cases, seeing an un-embalmed body is not as difficult as one might fear.

Our natural approach honours the deceased without the use of invasive or harmful procedures.

Proudly Recommended by the Natural Death Centre

The process of gently washing and preparing your loved one for visiting is not embalming.

In fact, we are fundamentally opposed to embalming and take great pride in the fact that Rounce Funeral Services are recommended by the esteemed Natural Death Centre.

As a leading authority in natural and eco-friendly funeral care, the Natural Death Centre is dedicated to empowering families with choices that honour both their loved ones and the environment.

Their mission is to promote gentle, sustainable practices that respect the natural cycle of life and death, while offering guidance to those seeking alternatives to conventional funeral methods.

Dressing and Clothing

We welcome you to provide clothing that reflects your loved one’s personality and style. Whether it’s their favourite outfit, fragrance, or makeup, we will handle these items with great care. For those considering cremation or natural burial, certain clothing guidelines must be followed to ensure safety and environmental compliance:

  • Post-Mortem Care: If a post-mortem has been conducted, high-neck clothing is often the most suitable choice, especially for open coffin visits.

  • Cremation: Clothing must not contain materials that emit toxic chemicals when cremated, such as rubber, vinyl, latex, or items like glass, batteries, and alcohol.

  • Natural Burial: Burial clothing must be made entirely of natural fibres, such as cotton, wool, or linen, avoiding synthetic materials like plastic, buttons, or zippers. These eco-friendly choices respect the environment while honouring your loved one.
